The Self-Defense Basics Workshop gives women a practical, beginner-friendly introduction to personal safety and physical self-defense.

In three hands-on hours, you will learn how to recognize danger, use your body and voice with confidence, strike vulnerable targets, escape common grabs, and create the opportunity to safely get away.

What you will learn

You will leave with a practical foundation that addresses both avoiding danger and physically responding when escape is necessary.

Awareness, Boundaries, and Prevention

  • Recognizing warning signs and behavior changes
  • Understanding intuition and responding to discomfort
  • Using strong posture and confident body language
  • Setting verbal boundaries without overexplaining
  • Interrupting pressure, manipulation, and unwanted contact
  • Identifying exits and creating safer positioning
  • Reducing distraction in parking lots and public spaces

Physical Self-Defense Skills

  • Creating a strong and balanced defensive stance
  • Using palm strikes, hammer fists, knees, and other tools
  • Targeting vulnerable areas when escape is necessary
  • Escaping common wrist grabs and restraints
  • Protecting your head and maintaining space
  • Moving toward safety instead of staying engaged
  • Applying skills through controlled partner practice

What to expect during class

Supportive Instruction

Skills are explained clearly, demonstrated step by step, and practiced in a nonjudgmental environment.

Hands-On Practice

You will practice striking pads, moving with purpose, setting boundaries, and working through common physical situations.

Practical Confidence

The goal is not to turn you into a fighter. It is to help you recognize options and trust yourself enough to use them.

What to bring

Wear clothing that allows you to move comfortably. Training equipment is provided.

Athletic Clothing Comfortable clothing that allows unrestricted movement.
Athletic Shoes Supportive, closed-toe shoes suitable for movement and balance.
Water Bottle Bring water so you can remain hydrated throughout training.
An Open Mind Every skill can be modified based on your comfort and ability.

Common questions

Do I need to be physically fit?

No. The workshop is designed for everyday women with different fitness levels and physical abilities. Skills may be modified.

Will I be sparring or fighting someone?

No. Training uses controlled partner work, striking pads, and practice equipment. You will not be placed into a fight.

Can I attend alone?

Yes. Many women attend independently. Partner work can be arranged during class.

Can teenagers attend?

The workshop may be appropriate for participants age 12 and older. A parent or guardian should review the class details before registering a minor.

Is the workshop included with my COMBOXING membership?

No. The monthly workshop is normally registered for separately at $99 unless it is included through a specific promotion.

What is the refund policy?

Registration reserves limited workshop space. You are eligible for a full refund up to 24 hours before the event. Cancellations 24 hours before classes, included no shows, are not eligible for refund.

Do I need to complete a waiver?

Yes. All participants must complete the required liability waiver before taking part in physical training.
